Types of procedure

Three ways a knee is replaced — matched to what's actually worn

Not every knee needs the same operation. Depending on how much of the joint is affected, your surgeon may recommend resurfacing the whole knee, replacing just the worn compartment, or treating both knees in one trip. Each is priced separately in the estimator below.

Total Knee Replacement

Typical stay in Bangalore: 18–24 nights

The most common knee procedure: the worn ends of the thigh and shin bones are resurfaced and the whole joint replaced with a precision implant. The standard choice for advanced osteoarthritis affecting the whole knee, giving lasting relief and a stable, durable joint.

Partial (Unicompartmental) Knee Replacement

Typical stay in Bangalore: 14–20 nights

When only one side of the knee is worn, just that compartment is replaced — sparing healthy bone and ligaments. A smaller operation than a full replacement, with a quicker recovery and a more natural-feeling knee for suitable candidates.

Bilateral Knee Replacement

Typical stay in Bangalore: 21–28 nights

Both knees replaced in a single trip — either in one operation or staged a few days apart — so you travel, recover and rehabilitate once rather than twice. Ideal when arthritis affects both knees and you want it all resolved in one journey.

Your surgeon confirms the right procedure for you after reviewing your reports — the estimator below lets you price any of these options in your own currency.

Understanding the procedure

A closer look at what happens, and why it works

What the surgery addresses

The worn joint surface, replaced — not your whole leg

In a knee replacement, the surgeon resurfaces only the damaged ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) — the cartilage that has worn away (shown in terracotta) — and caps them with a smooth, durable implant. Your ligaments, kneecap and surrounding tissue are preserved wherever possible. The result is a stable joint that glides without the bone-on-bone pain.

How long it lasts

Modern knee implants are designed to last 15–20 years or more. For most patients, one replacement lasts the rest of their life.

Who it's for

People with advanced arthritis whose pain limits daily life and hasn't settled with medication, injections or physiotherapy.

Anaesthesia

Usually a spinal anaesthetic with sedation, often preferred for joint replacement — your surgeon and anaesthetist confirm what's right for you.

Your recovery

What healing looks like, week by week

Recovery is gradual but steady. Here's a realistic picture of the typical path — your own timeline depends on your health, age and which procedure you have.

Days 1–3

In hospital

You're up and standing with support within a day. Physiotherapy begins almost immediately — gentle bending, supported steps. Pain is managed closely by the ward team.

Days 4–7

Early mobility

Walking short distances with a frame or crutches. Stitches checked, swelling monitored. Most patients move to their recovery accommodation around now.

Week 2

Building range

Daily physio. Bending improves steadily; you'll manage stairs with support. Your surgeon reviews progress before clearing you to fly.

Weeks 3–4

Cleared to travel home

Most patients fly home around the three-week mark, walking comfortably with a stick or unaided, with a clear home-physio plan.

Months 2–3

Back to daily life

Driving, desk work and normal routines resume. Continued physio builds strength.

6–12 months

Full benefit

The knee continues to strengthen; most people return to walking, swimming, cycling and an active life without the old pain.

Common questions

What patients ask us most

How long will I need to stay in Bangalore? +

Plan for about three to four weeks in total. That covers a few days of pre-operative assessment, a 3โ€“5 night hospital stay, and the important first couple of recovery weeks before your surgeon clears you to fly home.

Is the quality really comparable to the UK, US or Australia? +

Yes. We coordinate care only at NABH-accredited hospitals, several with internationally accredited (JCI) specialist units โ€” the same standard that accredits leading Western hospitals. These are dedicated, high-volume orthopaedic units, not general wards.

What does the indicative price actually include? +

Our package figures cover the surgery, surgeon and theatre fees, the implant, your hospital stay, pre-op assessments, in-hospital physiotherapy and our coordination. Your exact quote โ€” issued within 48 hours โ€” makes every line item clear, with no hidden extras.

Will someone be with me through the process? +

Always. Because we're based in Bangalore, your coordinator can meet you at the airport, be present at consultations, and stay close through recovery โ€” a familiar face for you and reassurance for family watching from home.

What about after I fly home? +

Before you leave, your surgeon prepares a full discharge summary for your doctor at home, and we stay in touch to help with any follow-up questions during your recovery.
